Rays Release Jack Cust; Reassign Others

Although I wasn’t optimistic about Jack Cust’s prospects when he signed with the Rays in February, I thought he would hang around the organization into the regular season. That will not be the case, however, as the Rays released Cust on Saturday afternoon, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune. Presumably Cust didn’t show enough bat speed to merit consideration for a big-league job down the road, and as a result the Rays didn’t feel necessitated to clog up the Durham lineup with a non-entity. Or maybe he asked for his release to pursue another job. Whatever the case, he’s no longer with the org.

The Rays also sent a number of players to minor-league camp, most notably Dane De La Rosa and Cole Figueroa, according to Mooney. None of the players had a chance at opening the season on the major league roster.

  1. Cust really killed the IL last year, but he looked pretty toast against ML pitching this spring. I would not be surprised to hear the Rays initiated the release. I doubt Cust will find any organization with a better situation for him (Playing in Triple-A behind James Loney for a contending franchise? That’s the Quad-A dream.).
