Earlier today the Rays formally announced their preliminary list of managerial candidates. Here are the eight names that were given:

Manny Acta: A former two-time manager (Washington and Cleveland) currently serving as an analyst for ESPN. Is known for embracing advanced metrics.

Kevin Cash: Former big-league catcher including a stint with the (Devil) Rays. After retiring, he served as an advanced scout (Toronto) and is the current bullpen coach in Cleveland.

Craig Counsell: Played for five teams over a 15-year career. Has experience in front office and broadcast booth.

Raul Ibanez: MLB veteran most recently with Kansas City. Known for leadership ability in the clubhouse.

Dave Martinez: Joe Maddon’s bench coach and former (Devil) Ray. Thought by many to be the favorite.

Charlie Montoyo: Nearly two decades of service to the Tampa Bay organization. Spent last eight seasons as manager for Triple-A Durham. Has managed at 29 members of the current 40-man roster.

Don Wakamatsu: Former manager (Seattle) and current bench coach with Kansas City. Worked as a coach in the Arizona, Toronto and Texas organizations as well as a scout with the Yankees. Named to Maddon’s All-Star staff.

  1. I like some combination of Montoyo and Martinez. Ibanez and Acta are interesting names, in Raul’s case perhaps a smaller role.
