Rays Select Jake Elmore’s Contract
Another day, another roster move stemming from an injury.
This time the Rays have purchased the contract of super-sub Jake Elmore from Triple-A Durham and placed infielder Ryan Brett on the 15-day disabled list.
Elmore is a right-handed hitter who can work counts and put the bat on the ball, but that’s about the long and short of his offensive game. His most useful trait is his versatility, which culminated in an appearance at every position during the 2013 season.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Elmore’s promotion is that the Rays chose him over Hak-Ju Lee, who was already on the 40-man roster. Alas, that within itself isn’t a surprise. Lee has thus far been dreadful for Durham, and there have been murmurs about reduced athleticism. At this rate, it’s hard to see Lee sticking on the 40-man for much longer.
To create room for Elmore, the Rays moved Jeff Beliveau to the 60-day disabled list. His season is over with a torn labrum. We wish him the best during his recovery attempt.
As for the rest of the Tampa Bay Bulls, they’ll play the second of three games against the Red Sox on Wednesday night.
