Rays Sign James Darnell, Others | The Process Report

Rays Sign James Darnell, Others

The Rays have signed four players to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training, according to the team.

James Darnell, formerly with San Diego, is the most intriguing addition. Once a top prospect, he’s underwent three shoulder surgeries in the past few years. When healthy, Darnell was a bat-first player who lacked a true defensive home yet had solid hitting chops and good power. His current status is unclear, but if he can make a full recovery then he has a chance to become more than the typical minor-league free-agent signing.

The Rays also officially announced deals with utility infielder Ray Olmedo (who has been in the system twice before), right-handed pitcher Santiago Garrido, and catcher Ali Solis. We covered Solis earlier in the winter.
