Rays Sign Lance Cormier, Release Edgar Gonzalez

According to Adam Sosbey, the Rays have released Edgar Gonzalez and signed Lance Cormier to a minor league deal. Cormier is an old friend who struggled with the Dodgers earlier this season, allowing 17 runs in 13 2/3 innings pitched as well as four home runs and five walks—all while striking out seven.

Presumably, Cormier will report to Durham and take Gonzalez’s roster spot. It’s unknown whether he will be used as a starter, reliever, or in a piggyback capacity. Previously, Cormier spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Rays.
