Rays Sign Ryne Stanek

The Rays have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Ryne Stanek. Tampa Bay selected the 21-year-old from the University of Arkansas with the 29th pick in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He will report to Port Charlotte for workouts. Here’s more from our original report on Stanek:

Stanek is listed at 6-foot-4 though his wingspan may exceed that. He delivers the ball from a three-quarters arm slot with a strong, quick arm. Unfortunately the delivery looks top-heavy, and he lands on a stiff front leg. At his best he throws two potential plus-to-double-plus offerings in his fastball and slider, along with a third possibly average offering in his changeup. There are command concerns, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Stanek’s name mentioned as a pitcher who may wind up in the bullpen—especially if his stuff wavers as it has this season.

Stanek’s projections range from the front part of the rotation to the backend of the bullpen; depending on the development of his changeup and command. The Rays have now signed 33 of their 41 picks from the draft.
