Rays Trade Steve Pearce | The Process Report

Rays Trade Steve Pearce

The Rays traded Steve Pearce back to his former home in Baltimore just before the trade deadline passed Monday.

In return for Pearce, who is a free agent after this season, the Rays received minor league switch-hitting catcher Jonah Heim. Heim was ranked as the 10th-best prospect in the Baltimore system by Baseball America in their mid-season update last month. BaseballProspectus had a positive report on him this past June citing a solid frame & mild additional projection.

Heim is considered the best defensive catcher in the system but hasn’t hit much over four seasons as he owns a career .216/.281/.320 slash line. He has spent 2016 in High A ball as a 20 year old having turned 21 a few weeks back. He missed a good chunk of time in 2015 with a foot injury while sliding into second base which has not helped his offensive development.
