Report: Bobby Jenks Close to Deal with Rays

According to our pal Craig Calcaterra of Hardball Talk, the Rays and Bobby Jenks are to a deal.

Bobby Jenks and the Tampa Bay Rays are talking as we speak, and a deal between the two of them could be done as early as tonight, a major league source tells me.  No word on the terms yet. No word on the meal per diem.

If you’ve been hanging around these parts, you’ll know that I am a big fan of this news. On the day of his “non-tendering” I immediately pegged Jenks as a target for the Rays.

With a flooded relief market including several former closers, Jenks could be facing a market that does not see him exclusively as a closer. Like Gregg, this is where the Rays may be able to leverage their ninth inning role in negotiations.

Again, this is mere speculation; however, the Rays have a need for Jenks-type pitcher. And in turn – like Benoit and Soriano did in 2010 – he could use the back end of the Rays’ bullpen as a spring board for next year’s free agency.

Win, win, right?
