Report: Rays Interested in Corey Hart
The Rays are among the teams interested in Corey Hart, according to a radio interview with the player.
Hart, having missed the season due to a pair of knee surgeries, is expected to be cleared medically in the coming weeks. Until then, his status is up in the air. Adam McCalvy of MLB.com noted Hart is a devoted family man whose wife and children live in Arizona. Package that development with Hart’s comments about taking a discount to return to Milwaukee, and his willingness to move to St. Pete is unclear.
If the Rays were to sign Hart, he would likely play first base. In recent years, he’s tapped into his grand raw power and since 2010 has averaged 29 home runs per season. He’s more than a power-only hitter, as he tends to post respectable batting average and on-base percentages. Still, there’s swing-and-miss in Hart’s game, which is to be expected from a large human being. He’s not going to threaten for the team lead in walks, and he tends to his expand his zone against soft stuff. At any rate, the overall package is more than enough to forgive his limitations.
