Report: Rays Interested in Jamey Carroll

The Rays are among the teams to check in on Jamey Carroll, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith.

Nicholson-Smith’s note comes a day after Ken Rosenthal reported Tampa Bay had interest in Mark Ellis. Both players are older, right-handed second basemen whom, were either to sign with the Rays, would likely be used in a role similar to the one inhibited in recent seasons by Jeff Keppinger and Ryan Roberts. That’s because neither is too impressive against same-side pitching, but provide value in the field and against southpaws:

Player Versus LHP (11-13) Versus RHP (11-13)
Ellis .291/.338/.436 .245/.304/.319
Carroll .309/.373/.395 .248/.319/.285

Ellis will presumably draw interest from other teams looking for an everyday second baseman. Carroll, for his part, resembles Scrappy Doo.
