Report: Rays Scouted Javier Vazquez

The Rays had scouts attend Javier Vazquez’s Friday night start in Puerto Rico, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Vazquez, who pitched in the majors last in 2011, is open to returning and reportedly prefers to pitch for a contender. While the Rays fit the bill, their level of interest is unclear, particularly after they signed Roberto Hernandez earlier this offseason. Still, you can understand why the Rays are doing their due diligence: Vazquez was a durable, above-average starter for much of his 14-year big-league career. That kind of pitcher is rarely available on the market at an affordable rate for the Rays.

Rosenthal noted that Vazquez hit 93 mph, which jives with the positive evaluation Tim Brown passed along from a scout earlier in the winter.
