Tampa Bay Rays Hold Interest in Rich Harden

The Rays have contacted Rich Harden, per Jon Morosi.

Presumably the team views the 29-year-old as a relief pitcher. Harden’s inability to stay healthy is well-noted, but consider that he hasn’t topped 150 innings pitched since 2004 (coming close at 148 in 2008). When he is healthy, he’s one of the nastiest pitchers in baseball; as demonstrated by a career 12.5% whiff rate. He did not look like his old self last year with Texas, posting a career worst 1.21 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a career low fastball velocity.

On an incentives-based deal, Harden makes sense as someone who can reinvent himself as a reliever with hopes that a reduced workload could assist in keeping him healthy.
