Rays Select Taylor Guerrieri at 24

Taylor Guerrieri is a 6-foot-3 prep righty from South Carolina (with a commitment to play for the Gamecocks). Baseball America had Guerrieri as the 10th best prospect in the draft because of his power arsenal that includes a fastball that “sits in the 93-96 range” and a curve. Like most high school pitchers, Guerrieri is still developing a changeup as well as a cutter.

The reason a talent like Guerrieri fell nearly into the mid-20s has to do with makeup issues. For instance, Guerrieri was on his second high school. Otherwise, Guerrieri had the stuff and body to go half a round earlier. Baseball America had a nice feature on Guerrieri not too long ago, with illuminating quotes like:

“It’s the best high school arm I’ve ever seen,” an American League scout said. “I walked into the ballpark and saw the first pitch he threw in the bullpen and I could have left. There is no chance I see this guy unless he’s pitching against us in the big leagues.

“Everything was above-average to plus-plus the day I saw him. It’s easy, effortless. I walked out of there with my jaw dropped. This guy is unbelievable.”
