Wil Myers Demoted | The Process Report

Wil Myers Demoted

It was a matter of when not if Wil Myers would be demoted. That when came today.

There are some valid baseball reasons for sending Myers to the farm: He needs to continue developing the defense and baserunning aspects of his game, much in the way Matt Joyce needed to sharpen his secondary skills during his first months with the Rays. Two other big factors are tied to Myers’ big-league service time. By keeping Myers in the minors through the first two or three weeks of the season the Rays have ensured they will control him through the 2019 season rather than 2018. Likewise, if the Rays keep Myers down through mid-to-late June they’ll be able to avoid gifting him a fourth arbitration year.

So we’ll probably see Myers in St. Pete before the season ends. Just don’t expect to see him much, if at all, during the first half of the schedule.

Update: Juan Sandoval, Will Inman, J.D. Martin, Brandon Guyer and Josh Lueke were also sent down today. Guyer and Lueke, members of the 40-man roster, should see major-league action at some point this season.
